Heavy duty press brakes for plate and long components

When parts get thicker or longer, the press brake has to resist much higher loads without the frame or ram deflecting. A heavy duty press brake machine has deeper side frames, a heavier ram and bed, larger hydraulic cylinders and more stroke and open height for tall tooling and deep sections.

Devraj's heavy-duty range covers 125 T, 250 T and 400 T machines with working lengths from 3200 mm up to 6000 mm. They are used for trailer chassis members, crane and earth-moving equipment parts, transmission towers, silos, structural sections and thick brackets.

What a 250 or 400 ton press brake can bend

Air bending mild steel with a V-die about ten times the thickness, the approximate force per metre is about 52 T for 8 mm, 65 T for 10 mm and 78 T for 12 mm. So, as a guide:

  • A 125 T machine bends 6 mm mild steel over roughly 2 to 2.5 m, or thicker plate over shorter lengths.
  • A 250 T machine bends 10 mm mild steel over about 3.5-4 m, or 12 mm over about 3 m.
  • A 400 T machine handles 12 mm plate over long lengths and thicker plate where the die opening allows.

High-tensile and wear plates need considerably more force and a larger die. Send us your plate grade and drawing and we will check the tonnage, die opening and minimum flange. The tonnage calculator gives a first estimate.

Design points that matter at high tonnage

  • Frame stiffness: side frames and ram must limit deflection under load so the angle stays the same along the length.
  • Crowning: compensates for bed and ram deflection on long bends. Ask for the crowning method in the quotation.
  • Open height and stroke: the 400 T model has 610 mm open height and 300 mm stroke for deep sections and tall tooling.
  • Throat depth: 400-500 mm on these models, for wide flanges.
  • Tooling and handling: heavy dies and plates need crane access and, often, front sheet supports.

Industries

Heavy duty press brakes are used in construction and structural fabrication, trailer and commercial vehicle body building, material handling equipment, and large fabrication plants.

Site and installation planning

Large press brakes need a designed foundation, adequate crane capacity for unloading and tool changes, and a suitable electrical supply. We provide the foundation drawing, machine weight and power requirements with the quotation, so you can prepare the site before delivery.

Press brake features

  • Inch, single and continuous cycles so the operator can choose the mode that suits set-up, trial bends or batch production.
  • Full powered stroke, making the machine suitable for general sheet metal press work and not only air bending.
  • Three ram speeds that reduce idle travel time and improve output per shift.
  • Instant ram stoppage, which helps prevent accidents and rejected parts.
  • Quiet operation with low impact loads on tools and foundations.
  • Lower power consumption and low wear and maintenance, which keep running costs and downtime down.

Frequently asked questions

What is the largest press brake Devraj makes?

The Heavy Duty CNC 400T: 4000 kN nominal force, 4000-6000 mm working length, 300 mm stroke, 610 mm open height and 500 mm throat depth.

Do heavy duty press brakes need a special foundation?

Yes. Machines of this size need a designed foundation. We share the foundation drawing with the order.

Can you build a press brake longer than 6000 mm or above 400 T?

Please send your requirement. Non-standard sizes are assessed case by case.

Why does high-tensile plate need more tonnage?

Bending force rises in proportion to the material's tensile strength. High-tensile and wear-resistant plates may need two to three times the force of mild steel, plus a larger die opening to avoid cracking.
